A space to grow

It is our mission to research, demonstrate, and be a repository of fruit varieties and fruit growing techniques on Vashon Island. The orchard is a shared space, where we enjoy growing fruit together, holistically, and resourcefully.

FAQs

  • Visitors are welcome during our morning work sessions, or by prior arrangements with the Orchard Manager, Emily MacRae. Her email is orchard@vashonislandfruitclub.org. Please include “Orchard Visit” in the subject line.

  • Aw shucks! We never thought you’d ask. But since you did, here’s a list of what we’re pickin’:

    155 Apple
    22 Pear
    7 Cherry
    8 Peach
    8 Grape
    5 Almond
    10 Plum
    8 Strawberry
    14 Blueberry
    5 Mulberry
    2 Persimmon
    2 Pawpaw
    4 Cane fruit
    1 Nectarine
    1 Apricot
    2 Cranberry
    1 Medlar
    1 Asian Pear
    1 Quince
    2 Fig
    2 Elderberry
    2 Pluot
    2 Pluerry
    And many, many more…

Wait? There’s more varieties of fruit than that?

As we said, many, many more.

  • Heck, yeah! We welcome volunteers of all experience levels. Please email the Orchard Manager, Emily MacRae at orchard@vashonislandfruitclub.org for more information.

  • The Orchard is the brainchild of Emily MacRae, who wanted to create a living memorial to Dr. Bob. In 2012, the fruit club broke ground on 3/5th of an acre at the top of Sunrise Ridge. Club members Bob Dixon, Anne Woodward, Mike Ligrano, and Jerry Gehrke were key contributors to the Orchard’s establishment and early development. Dr. Bob Norton, founder of the Fruit Club and for whom the Orchard is named, served as head Horticulturalist, responsible for many of the early decisions of what and how to grow.

  • Financial contributions are always welcome! While the vast majority of our routine labor comes from volunteers, we occasionally need to hire outside help for bigger projects as well as pay rent for the orchard. Those things cost money. Financial support also allows us to acquire and test new breeds and expand our outreach.

If you have plants, trees or equipment to donate, please send a message to orchard@vashonislandfruitclub.com.
