Join us for our first “pick and press” event of 2025! We will be picking from 3.5 trees at member Nancy Rose’s house, then using two presses to press the apples into juice. We’ll be leaving ~6 gallons for Nancy to use for the year and then splitting the rest between participating pick and press households.

Nancy’s orchard is a special place. She grew up on the property and her father and Bob Sestrap of Wax Orchard grafted and planted many of the trees, but several were already there and mature when she was a small child. We are honored to have the opportunity to pick at this property and hope you enjoy the experience. We send a huge thank you to Nancy and her family for allowing us to do so!

The Details:

• Pressing is optional; if you’d like to pick and take whole apples home you’re more than welcome.

• If you have apples at home that you’d like to press, please bring them over. We’ll be working with respondents to create a pressing schedule.

• No groundfall apples can be accepted, no exceptions.

• Having your apples as ready to press as possible is encouraged. If you want to wash your apples, please do so at home.

• We’ll do our best to get you in your designated time slot, but if we don’t, we’ll definitely get you your time.

• Lunch will not be provided so please plan to bring your own snack and water.

• Please bring whatever equipment you prefer to pick and press, including the following:

  • Containers to collect and transport your apples and juice (always best to overestimate the volume you’ll need)

  • Bring buckets, bins or bags to bring your post-pressing pomace home with you.

  • Ladder(s) (optional)

  • Pole picker (optional)

• Please bring vessels to put your juice in - always best to overestimate!

• Please also bring buckets, bins or bags to bring your post pressing pomace home with you.

• Having your apples as ready to press as possible is welcome, especially if we’ve got a lot of folks that want to get in on pressing. If you want to wash your apples, please wash them at home or please arrive early to wash them ahead of your time slot.

Join us for an Open Orchard event in the Dr. Bob Norton Memorial Orchard for a discussion of pears and blueberries. Cheryl Grunbock will be talking about blueberries and Nashi Orchard owners Jim Gerlach and Cheryl Lubbert will be covering pears. At this event we’ll be discussing pear cultivation and sampling some of the ripe varieties. This is a great opportunity to learn something new, check out our working orchard, and connect with the fruit club community.

Elizabeth Vogt and the Day Neutral Strawberry sub-committee at DBNMO will describe and implement our ongoing Strawberry Trial. Some varieties of apple trees bear fruit on short spurs, and others like to blossom at the tips of branches, each type requiring different methods of pruning and training. Knowing which type you have and pruning correctly is critical to avoid inadvertently preventing a tree from producing apples. We will focus this session on helping you learn which varieties are spur or tip bearers, how to recognize which types your trees are, and how to prune an apple tree for good fruit production based on spur or tip bearing characteristics. We will also discuss summer pruning of pears, plums and other fruit in response to audience interest.

Ladd Leavens, who maintains the grapes at DBNMO, in addition to mowing and serving as the Club's Treasurer, will demonstrate his summer pruning techniques and describe our plans for another grape installation in the southwest corner of the orchard. DBNMO Manager Emily MacRae will present some of our methods for protecting tree fruit and berries using netting.
